Transgender Awareness Week
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, a one-week event to increase awareness, visibility and knowledge of trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary people and celebrate the lives and identities of trans people who have existed throughout time and across cultures. Trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary come from all backgrounds and hold diverse intersecting identities. It is important to remember these intersections and how they can impact the lives and experiences of trans people.
During Trans Awareness Week this year, we want to focus on intersectionality (coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, American civil rights advocate and a scholar) which is the concept of how different social identities that all of us hold overlap and can’t be held in isolation from one another. Conversations around privilege, oppression and trans awareness need to include race, age, ability, immigration status, neurodiversity and other factors that are interwoven into the lives of trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary people.
Trans Care BC has created new tailored information pages for trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary people and who may have specific needs based on the identities they hold and communities they are a part of. Trans Awareness Week is a great time to acknowledge the diversity within our communities—explore these resources to learn more:
- Indigenous people—information for trans members of Indigenous communities.
- Newcomers & refugees—discover helpful information for your self-advocacy and resource navigation as a transgender newcomer to Canada.
- Neurodivergent people—find helpful information and resources for members of the neurodivergent trans community.
- Older adults—support for older adults who want to transition or access gender-affirming care
- People with disabilities—considerations for disabled people navigating gender-affirming care.
